Simonds, Lieutenant General Guy
1903–1974
   Simonds was an extremely versatile Canadian Corps commander operating in the European Theater. He commanded an infantry division in Sicily and an armored division in Italy achieving remarkable advances with low casualties. Commanding the Canadian II Corps following D-Day, he led a technically inventive offensive on Falaise on 8 August 1944 (Operation Totalize) which made use of armored infantry carriers operating by night. Simonds also led his Corps in the Scheldt campaign in which he meticulously destroyed the German defenses along the waterways around Antwerp and then Nijmegen. Simonds commanded the Canadian 1st Army twice during the Scheldt campaign and again in the latter stages of the advance into West Germany.
